I’ve been lucky to have my sweet Sofia in my life for over 10 years.. we met right in the midst of our awkward pre-teen years. I remember the first time I saw her. I found one of those glamour-photo-stickers in our middle school hallway on the floor; she was posing with a friend and I thought she was the prettiest girl I’d ever seen. The crazy thing is, once you talk to her.. you realize she is even more beautiful on the inside. (I know, right? It doesn’t seem possible–and it’s certainly not fair!)
We grew closer as we grew older, and she became so supportive of my relationship with my boyfriend Mike while he was overseas in the Peace Corps. She would follow our blogs and frequently check in on us. We both loved to travel and when we would reunite, we’d get lost in each others stories and photos from our exotic adventures. Her latest adventure just happened to be the one where she finally found her Prince Charming…
Little did Aboudi realize, but Sofia had been patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for him her whole life. I remember when she’d paint a picture of her perfect man… and Aboudi is definitely it.
They met briefly at a wedding 4 years ago in Lebanon. Sparks flew immediately… but what could come of it? He lived in Dubai and Sofia was moving to NYC.
While living in NYC, she decided to go on a trip to Abu Dhabi and Lebanon with her aunt. It had been awhile since Sofia had spoken to Aboudi, but realized when she was mapping out her trip that Dubai was just a short hour away from where she was going. Plans were made and they decided to meet up.
Sofia and her aunt met his family at a restaurant and as soon as she walked in she locked eyes with him. From then on, they both just knew. The next day they rode camels together in the desert, watched the sunset and the moon rise. It was pure magic.
Entering back to reality, they both realized they’d have to make long distance work for a while. The distance ended up bringing them closer together, and planned visits to see each other every chance they got. In February, while visiting Aboudi in Dubai, he proposed to her.
Sofia claims, “There we so many things that could have made that trip different or made us miss seeing each other again. Now I truly believe everything has a reason in life and every decision each of us made leading up to that point was made for a purpose. Prior to that moment, neither one of us were even thinking about marriage. It’s funny how one second of seeing each other that day completely changed our lives forever. And we couldn’t be happier that it worked out that way and that we found each other.”
